The Foundation for Reality Advancement

What is reality made of? And how would we know?

A research foundation for the questions science has left open.

Read the research

The problem

Four hundred theories. No way to compare them.

Consciousness science has more than 400 theories on the table. Some say the brain produces experience. Some say experience is fundamental. A survey by Robert Kuhn maps them all and ranks none.

Kuhn, Landscape of Consciousness.

Key insight

Before we can answer the question, we need a way to compare the answers.

02 / Why we exist

For a hundred years, the numbers never got tighter.

Test

The test kept changing.

No two studies measured the same thing.

Scoring

The scorers knew the answer.

They were measuring their own expectation.

Misses

The misses stayed in the drawer.

Nobody could tell how often it failed.

Key insight

We keep the test the same every time.

The Foundation for Reality Advancement is an independent research organization founded by Patrick Hogue. We bring questions once thought of as metaphysical into empirical investigation: one standard, applied in the open, with its limits published.

Map.
Measure.
Record.

Three jobs, done the same way every time.

How it works

Step 1

Map

State each theory's claims in plain, common terms.

Step 2

Measure

Score it on the Continuum Standard: six steps, from naming what would prove a theory wrong to surviving a test its critics designed.

Step 3

Record

Publish the score with its count, its source and its limits.

Source

The Continuum Standard, Read the method.

Why limits matter

A claim stays on our books only while its results keep getting more certain.

What we do not claim

04 / What we do not claim

What we do not claim.

That consciousness has been explained.

That a high score means a theory is true. A score measures how testable it is.

Medical, psychological or spiritual advice.

That anything beyond physics has been shown. Nothing counts until a second laboratory gets the same result.

Key insight

Where we are unsure, we say so.

Every result carries how many were counted, where the evidence came from, and what it cannot show.

05 / Work so far

Early, careful, in the open.

First results, a method others can check, and an outside lab scheduled to repeat it in 2027.

Fifty is a sample of the field, not all of it. Scores measure how testable a theory is, not whether it is right.

The University of Virginia repeats the work with its own staff and scorers.

A companion app and a film are at concept stage. They depend on the research holding up, and neither has a date.

07 / The people

Patrick Hogue.

Patrick Hogue serves as the Foundation’s Chief Science Officer and leads its scientific research and development. A theoretician, he previously developed lithium extraction facilities in Chile’s Atacama Desert, where he established two industry world records. He is the creator of the Continuum Standard, which he presented at The Science of Consciousness 2026.

How we work

Independent. Open. Corrected.

We set our own questions and standards.

Methods and data are public.

When our results change, we say what changed.

08 / The invitation

If this is your question too.

We want to hear from researchers who will test the method, writers who will explain it accurately, and skeptics willing to sign a protocol before the run. Disagreement that points to evidence is the most useful thing we can get.

What is reality made of? And how would we know?

We are still asking. Come ask with us.
